St Louis Cathedral

Named for Louis IX, sainted king of France, the St. Louis Cathedral is a popular destination for New Orleans visitors. Since the early 1700s, it has been the site of several church structures. Today's building was dedicated in 1794, after the previous one succumbed to a great fire 5 years earlier. Mass is conducted every day. Other sacraments performed include baptism, confirmation and marriage. Tourists are welcome to walk around the buildings and grounds, and to join in services and Confession. The Convent Museum at 1112 Chartres Street at Uruslines, is open for self-guided tours Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For a hotel close to St. Louis Cathedral and the Convent Museum, choose Le Pavillon Hotel.
