Two historic icons are the Old Absinthe House and Jean Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop Bar. The first serves mixed drinks, beer and wine, plus pub fare, but definitely try the absinthe with its flaming sugar cube. The walls are covered in business cards, so why not leave yours too? At Lafitte's, enjoy a drink and live piano music in what is reputed to be the oldest building used as a bar in the country, built in 1722. Try their specialty of the house, the Hurricane.

Most nearby restaurants are actually off Bourbon Street in the surrounding blocks. Some choices with an actual Bourbon Street address include Cafe Beignet, 311 Bourbon Street, which serves the famous pastry, plus omelets, sandwiches, waffles and more. It's a good bet for late-night dining. For an elegant experience, make reservations at Galatoire's Restaurant, 209 Bourbon Street, where you can sample the Shrimp Remoulade and Turtle Soup.
